When you think of The Bahamas you might think about beaches, warm water, and just laying around, but what most people don’t know is that they have a rich sports culture and history. The Bahamas have won 16 Olympic medals, which is more than any other country with a population below 1 million. The traditional sport of The Bahamas is sloop sailing, the national sport of the Bahamas is cricket, and basketball is the most popular sport in The Bahamas. The Bahamas won their first ever Olympic gold medal in sailing in 1964. In the 1992 Olymipics, Frank Rutherford took the bronze and brought home the first-ever track Olympic medal for The Bahamas. Per capita, The Bahamas is also the most successful nation at the Olympics. Another very popular sport in The Bahamas is track and field, mainly because they have had a lot of success in the IAAF World Championships, Pan American Games, and Commonwealth Games. Lastly, the most popular sports for visitors, visiting The Bahamas, are swimming, snorkeling, boating, fishing, sailing, scuba diving, and golf. As you can see The Bahamas are a place that has a rich sports culture, and love for sports.
