Geography Overview
The Bahamas are a small country consisting of an archipelago of over 700 islands and kays. The islands dominate the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico (now known as the Gulf of America), the Caribbean sea, and the whole central America Region. The Bahamas also lie to the north of Cuba and Hispaniola. They go for more than 500 miles southeast-northwest between Grand Bahama Island and about 60 miles off the Southeast coast of Florida. The Bahamas consists mostly of flatland, where there is generally a range of just a couple feet in elevation. Some of the islands facing the Atlantic have a range of hills on the northeastern side that is parallel to the longer axes of the islands. The climate of the Bahamas is one of the things that makes it stick out. The average temperature varies from low 70’s F during the winter to low 80’s F in the summer. Very rarely at extremes, the temps go to just below 60 degrees fahrenheit and just above low 90’s fahrenheit. Winds come from the northeast in winter and the southeast in summer, and they help cool the generally humid atmosphere. For these reasons, the Bahamas are a great place to visit if you are looking for a warm, small, and beautiful set of islands.
